I'd recommend these services to anyone who loves to cook and doesn't mind paying a premium for the convenience of having the planning and shopping done for them—and who value seasonal, locally grown, and sustainable ingredients. The meals often take more than half an hour to cook, though, so it's not really saving you a ton of time in the kitchen. (With the gnocchi dish, Blue Apron had me picking the leaves off of several tiny Brussels sprouts, which was insane, but in the end worth it.) Whether these services are worth it to you or not may also depend on how much you hate the "What's for dinner?" question.

One note: Because the delivery depends on ice packs, you end up with a lot of these plastic-covered lumps of frozen liquid. The company says they are non-toxic, but they are to be disposed of in the trash, not down the drain. The fixed menu was a bit of an issue - there was a dish with Spanish rice and I still have bad memories of that dish from my grade-school cafeteria - but the prices were outstanding and the food was fresh.

And the flavorful Pork and Gold Rice Middlins was like a Southern version of risotto, but without all the cheese. Ingredients are regionally and seasonally sourced and organic wherever possible. Overall, I was disappointed with Purple Carrot. The food was good, but it couldn’t make up for the many other problems. One issue really did it in for me—the lack of perishable label on the delivery box. I actually had to attempt Purple Carrot twice, for the first time, my food had all gone bad when I opened the box. All of these companies ship with insulated packaging and ice packs, but that only lasts so long. Only Purple Carrot didn’t label the box as perishable, and only theirs was bad when I received it. After that first package, I contacted the company and told them my food was rotten. I said I didn’t know if it was UPS or the fact that I live in a very large apartment building and mail doesn’t always get pushed through the system the exact day it arrives, but asked for another package and requested they make sure to mark it as perishable. When it arrived, AGAIN, it wasn’t labeled to be food, but nothing had gone bad and I was able to make the meals.

Hungryroot delivers farm-fresh, 7-minute meals designed by Bravo Top Chef Masters’s Franklin Becker using spiralized vegetables as the base – think zucchini or beet or carrot or turnip noodles. All you have to do is sauté the faux pasta with a bit of olive oil and the pre-cooked ingredients that come with each package (think sweet potato noodles with creamy cashew Alfredo or Daikon noodles with Korean scallion gochujang). Each dish also comes with an add-on option like chicken, tofu, or roasted falafel to make it more filling without sacrificing its nutritional value.

By now, depending on your food spending habits, you could be thinking either "Holy scallops, that's expensive" or "I spend that much on takeout anyway." I was in the holy scallops camp, but one thing to consider is the ingredients are locally sourced and organic whenever possible, and those products also cost more at the grocery store.

Healthy factor: All of Veestro’s meals are 100 percent plant-based and made with organic, non-GMO ingredients—and free of preservatives. While some foodies may turn up their noses at frozen food, the meals are frozen when fresh so they arrive ready to reheat. While we did find that the meals had to be reheated longer than the instructions indicate, you’ll still enjoy your meal relatively quickly and with minimal cleanup.

Healthy factor: Since it’s Paleo, you know your meals will be full of grass-fed and pastured protein and in-season produce, as well as free of gluten, soy, dairy, eggs, and sweeteners. Plus, the delivery service has developed relationships with local suppliers and farmers from whom they source ingredients.

It got confusing. – The recipes weren’t always clear and easy to follow. Several times, I was instructed to simply “cook,” with no indication of how hot the burner should be. – There was more than double what was needed of a few of the ingredients. – These recipes all said they wold take 40 or 45 minutes, which is longer than the times stated for the recipes from the other services. What’s more, these actually ended up taking closer to an hour.

And perhaps most impressive, the company has yet to repeat a smoothie recipe.

Overall, Home Chef has a lot of good things going for it. The options and variety of recipes is by far the best, and when you go on the site to choose your meals, everything from allergens to low-calorie and low-carb indicators are clear and visible before you even click the recipes. The food was all pretty good and simple to make.
